Privacy Policy

Rue (“we,” “us”) is a free app for following independent fitness instructors and finding their classes. This policy explains what we collect when you use the Rue iOS app and join-rue.com (together, the “Platform”), how we use it, and who can see it.

The short version: we don’t sell your information, we don’t show ads, and the classes you log in My practice are visible only to you.

1. Information We Collect

Your account

  • Your email address and password, or, if you sign in with Apple or Google, the name and email address they share with us.
  • Your name, username and account type (student, instructor or studio).
  • Your date of birth, to confirm you are 16 or older. Only you can see it.
  • A record that you accepted our Terms, and when.

Your profile

  • Your photo, bio, city and the styles you practice or teach.
  • Instructors also add their class schedules and where they teach, links to their own sites and social accounts (such as Instagram, TikTok or Spotify), and certifications. A certificate document you upload for verification can be opened only by you and Rue’s reviewers.
  • Studios add their name, address and details about their space.

What you do on Rue

  • The instructors, studios and students you follow, and who follows you.
  • Classes you save and classes you tap “i’m going” on.
  • Whether you went to a class: your answer when Rue asks “did you make it?”, and the instructor’s attendance mark if they take one.
  • Posts, photos, comments, likes, reposts and poll votes.
  • Messages and group chats you take part in.
  • Reports and blocks you make, and feedback you send us.

Your practice

  • Classes you log in My practice (the date, style, place and how it felt), your weekly goal, and the streaks and stats we work out from them and from classes you confirmed you went to. Only you can see these.

Collected automatically

  • Usage and device information: your device model, operating system, app version, and which screens you open and buttons you tap. This is linked to your account’s ID number, not your name or email address.
  • Push notification token: if you allow notifications, so we can send them to your phone.

Location, camera and photos

  • Location: if you allow it, the app uses your phone’s location to sort classes and studios by distance. Your location is used on your phone and is not stored on our servers.
  • Camera and photos: used only when you choose a photo to post, set a profile picture, or scan a schedule.

Rue does not process payments. We do not collect card, bank or payment details.

2. How We Use Your Information

  • To run the Platform: show your profile, your feed, instructors’ schedules and your calendar.
  • To send the notifications you’ve allowed, such as new classes from people you follow, messages, and asking whether you made it to a class.
  • To show you your practice: streaks, goals, milestones and history.
  • To let instructors see who is coming to their classes and who went.
  • To verify instructor certifications.
  • To keep Rue safe: checking content for abuse, acting on reports and blocks, and enforcing the minimum age.
  • To understand which features are used and to fix problems.
  • To send account emails, such as password resets.

We do not sell or rent your information, and we do not use it for advertising.

3. Who Can See What

  • Instructor and studio profiles, posts and class schedules are public. Anyone on Rue can see them, and anyone with a share link can open them on join-rue.com.
  • Student profiles are visible to other Rue users. If you make your account private (Settings → Privacy & security), people who don’t follow you see only your name, username and photo, and you approve who follows you.
  • “I’m going”: the instructor teaching the class (and anyone covering it) sees your name. Other students see only how many people are going.
  • “Did you make it?”: your answer is seen only by you and the class’s instructor.
  • Your practice log, goal and date of birth are seen only by you.
  • Messages are seen by the people in the conversation. Rue’s moderators can see a message if someone reports it.
  • Studios don’t receive your details from us. A studio that claims its page on Rue sees what any other user sees.

4. Companies That Help Us Run Rue

We share information with these service providers only so they can do their job for us:

  • Supabase: database, sign-in and photo storage.
  • Apple and Google: Sign in with Apple and Sign in with Google, if you use them.
  • Expo: delivering push notifications.
  • PostHog: app usage analytics.
  • Google Places: searching for addresses, venues and cities.
  • OpenAI: automatically checking the text and photos in posts, comments, messages and reports for abuse. Content it flags is hidden. We send content to OpenAI only for this safety check.
  • Anthropic: if an instructor scans or uploads a photo of their schedule, we send that photo to Anthropic to read the class times. Only the classes the instructor chooses to save are kept.
  • Resend: sending account emails.
  • Netlify: hosting join-rue.com.

We may also disclose information when the law requires it, to protect someone’s safety, or as part of a merger or sale of Rue, in which case this policy would continue to apply to your information.

5. Your Choices

  • Private account: Settings → Privacy & security.
  • Notifications: Settings → Notifications in the app, or your iPhone’s Settings.
  • Location, camera and photos: turn access on or off at any time in your iPhone’s Settings.
  • Block and report: from any profile, post or message.
  • Edit or delete: you can edit your profile and delete your posts and practice logs at any time.
  • Delete your account: Settings → Account → delete account. This permanently deletes your account, profile, follows, posts, comments, likes, saved classes, “i’m going” responses, practice log and date of birth. Messages you sent stay in the conversation for the other people in it, with your name removed.
  • Access or correction: email us to request a copy of your information or a correction we can’t make in the app.

6. How Long We Keep It

We keep your information while your account is open and delete it when you delete your account. We may keep reports and the records needed to deal with them, and anything the law requires us to keep. For example, we must preserve apparent child sexual abuse material that we report to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

7. Age Requirement

Rue is for people 16 and older. We ask for your date of birth when you sign up and don’t let anyone younger create an account. If we learn that someone under 16 has an account, we delete it. If you believe a child is using Rue, email us.

8. Security

Information is encrypted between the app and our servers. Access rules in our database limit each person to what they are allowed to see. Your sign-in is stored in your iPhone’s secure keychain. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong password and tell us if you notice anything wrong.

9. Intimate Images Shared Without Consent

To ask us to remove an intimate image of you that was shared without your consent, use our removal request form.

10. Changes to This Policy

When we change this policy, we’ll post the new version here and update the date at the top.
